Wasatch Mountains, Utah - Snowshoeing

January was a great month for snowshoeing in the Wasatch Mountains. Between cheap rentals at REI, friends with extra pairs of snowshoes, and a few new snowshoe owners, I had the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors with a bunch of fun people throughout the month. The snow may not have been the best, but anything beats being stuck indoors during the peak of winter.

Bon and I snowshoed up to Red Pine Lake in Little Cottonwood Canyon just after New Year's Day. I was super excited to get out into the mountains since I had a rather boring New Year holiday. The best part of the trip was getting above the foggy, smoggy inversion in the valley to see the crystal clear blue skies and fresh powder in the trees. The second best thing was a little Porcupine Pub and Grill treat after the good workout we had getting up to the lake.

Hunter, Col, and I snowshoed around Guardsman Pass in Big Cottonwood Canyon one week later. The road is closed during the winter and the risk of avalanches is low, so it's a great place to catch some amazing views of the canyons and get a good, safe workout at the same time. We trudged up a rather steep hill at the top of the pass to find frost covered trees and prayer flags blowing in the wind. The 360 degree view was spectacular - from the Uintas to Heber to Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons. And, more Porcupine Pub and Grill after the trek!

The last snowshoe trip of the month featured a great group of friends - Ryan, Bon, Mikey, Floyd, and Kyle. We headed up to White Pine Lake in Little Cottonwood Canyon and it turned out to be more of a workout than I had expected. It was fun to have such a big group of people, and we met several other fun groups along the way. Did I mention there was beer at Porcupine Pub and Grill after the trip .. it's becoming a habit...
