Wydaho Rendezvous - Grand Targhee, Wyoming - Mountain Biking

Roger and I decided to spend Labor Day weekend at the Wydaho Rendezvous mountain bike festival at Grand Targhee Resort in western Wyoming.  We hiked in nearby Teton Canyon over the Fourth of July holiday and figured the area would be fantastic for mountain biking.  The weather was looking stormy, but we decided to give the festival a shot since the registration money had already been paid.  We arrived around 8pm on Friday night and set up our camp in the designated camping area just off one of the resort parking lots.

The weather was good on Saturday morning and we decided to ride several trails on our own instead of joining a group ride.  We spent most of the time on Peaked Mountain, taking Andy's Trail, 38 Special, and Peaked Trails to make a loop.  38 Special was a great climbing trail with a ton of switchbacks, smooth riding, and lots of wildflowers.  Later in the morning, we headed over to Ricks Basin and rode More Cowbell and Perma Grin for another nice loop.

We planned to join a group ride on Saturday afternoon, but the weather turned stormy with rain, thunder, and hail, so we decided to relax at camp until the storms cleared.  The weather improved by late afternoon so we decided to check out the main festival.  There was food, music, demos, and a great raffle.

It rained most of Saturday night, and by Sunday morning, the rain began to mix with snow at the higher elevations.  With all of the mud and much colder temperatures, we didn't feel like sticking around to ride for the rest of the weekend.  We packed up our muddy gear and headed home to Salt Lake.  On the way through Idaho we decided to stop at Lava Hot Springs and soaked for several hours in the hot pools.  It was a great way to warm up.  Labor day was spent cleaning and drying gear.
